14 Miles of Nature, History & Hidden Monasteries on the Menalon Trail from Dimitsana to Stemnitsa & Back

🇬🇷

About the Menalon Trail

“The Menalon Trail charges no fee — just your time and your steps.”

The Menalon Trail is one of Greece’s top long-distance hiking routes, certified by the European Ramblers Associationas a Leading Quality Trail. It stretches through the mountainous heart of the Peloponnese (Arcadia) and connects a series of charming villages via ancient mule tracks, forest paths, and cobbled walkways.
📌 Trail Overview
  • Total Length: ~75 km
  • Sections: 8 (you can hike one or combine multiple)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Waymarking: Excellent (white/red blazes & signs)
  • Villages Along the Trail: Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Zygovisti, Elati, Vytina, Nymfasia, Magouliana, Valtesiniko, Lagkadia
  • Best Seasons: Spring (April–June) & Autumn (September–November)
  • Official Websitemenalontrail.eu
✋ Our Tip:
We found the AnavasiMapp-Menalon Trail app (recommended by the website) not very helpful — we couldn’t locate the trail clearly and there was no GPX. We used AllTrails instead: 👉 [Link to our route here!]

🧭

Section Hiked: Dimitsana to Stemnitsa (and back)

We hiked from Dimitsana to Stemnitsa via the Menalon Trail, then returned to Dimitsana via the road — making it a scenic 14-mile circular route. You can also take a taxi back (~€12) or try your luck with the local bus (twice weekly).
📝 Our Trail Stats:
  • Distance: 14 miles (8 miles on trail + 6 miles on road)
  • Time: ~6 hours (including beer/lunch stop!)
  • Trail Type: Out-and-back (Menalon Trail + return road)
  • Water: Available en route
  • Difficulty: Moderate – great for fit walkers, though those with vertigo may find some sections tricky
  • Navigation: Well-marked, but a map or app is still recommended

Our Experience

We based ourselves in Dimitsana for two nights at the lovely Despotikon Guest House — a beautifully restored old mansion in the heart of the village. Local pastries from the bakery and we were trail-ready!
The trail begins from the center of Dimitsana, where a large display board gives you helpful info. You’ll descend straight away, leaving cobbled streets for a shaded woodland path. The trail can be muddy in places, due to the small waterfall following the path.
After reaching the Open Air Water Power Museum, the hike follows old mule tracks and crosses the Bridge. From there, the trail gently climbs through the countryside to the Old and New Philosophou Monasteries — if open, you can take the scenic path around the buildings. If not take a short detour at the back of the monastery. There are some dogs in kennels here, but they’re safely enclosed.
A steep descent and ascent brings you to the dramatic Prodromos Monastery, clinging to the cliffside. Admission is free, but it’s closed from 13:00 to 17:00. Modest dress is required — but no stress if you forget, clothing is provided. (No photos inside, but coffee and cake from the monks are sometimes available!)
Next stop – Church of the Transfiguration of Christ, with amazing views over the gorge. The final leg to Stemnitsa is mostly uphill and exposed, but well-signposted with sweeping views.
We arrived in Stemnitsa, once known for goldsmithing and revolutionaries, and relaxed in the main square with a cold beer. Food was also available here!
Instead of hiking back the same way, we chose the 6-mile road walk — gently undulating, quiet, and with great views back into the gorge. Several benches along the way made it a peaceful return to Dimitsana. We were even offered a ride a couple of times which we’ve kindly rejected as we really enjoyed the walk.

Would We Recommend It?

Absolutely! This section of the Menalon Trail is rich in nature, history, and cultural gems — and free to explore. If you’re staying in the area and up for a decent walk, this circular route gives you the best of both worlds: ancient paths and scenic road views.
